Last-glacial-cycle glacier erosion potential in the Alps

چکیده
Abstract. The glacial landscape of the Alps has fascinated generations explorers, artists, mountaineers, and scientists with its diversity, including erosional features all scales from high-mountain cirques to steep valleys large overdeepened basins. Using previous glacier modelling results empirical inferences bedrock erosion under modern glaciers, we compute a distribution potential in over last cycle 120 000 years ago present. Despite uncertainties pertaining climate history unconstrained processes, resulting modelled patterns include persistent features. cumulative imprint shows very strong localization local maxima at mouths major Alpine some other upstream sections where glaciers are have flowed highest velocity. rates vary significantly through but show paradoxically little relation total volume. Phases advance maximum extension see rapid low elevation, while higher elevation is date phases less extensive glaciation. peak during deglaciation phases, when frontal retreat steeper surface slopes, implying that climatic conditions result might be quite transient specific. Our depict as time-transgressive patchwork, different parts range corresponding glaciation stages time periods.

PaleoenVironmental trends in VenezUela dUring the last glacial cycle
This chapter summarizes and updates the main Quaternary paleoclimatic and sea-level trends recorded in Venezuela, and provides a paleoenvironmental framework for studies addressing biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary topics. Venezuela has a number of localities that have provided paleoenvironmental sequences in the neotropical, circum-Caribbean domain, such as the Cariaco basin, Lake ...
متن کاملSea level change through the last glacial cycle.
Sea level change during the Quaternary is primarily a consequence of the cyclic growth and decay of ice sheets, resulting in a complex spatial and temporal pattern. Observations of this variability provide constraints on the timing, rates, and magnitudes of the changes in ice mass during a glacial cycle, as well as more limited information on the distribution of ice between the major ice sheets...
متن کاملThe last glacial cycle: transient simulations with an AOGCM
A number of transient climate runs simulating the last 120 kyr have been carried out using FAMOUS, a fast atmosphere–ocean general circulation model (AOGCM). This is the first time such experiments have been done with a full AOGCM, providing a three-dimensional simulation of both atmosphere and ocean over this period. Our simulation thus includes internally generated temporal variability over p...

متن کاملModelling the diversion of erratic boulders by the Valais Glacier during the last glacial maximum
In this study, a modelling approach was used to investigate the cause of the diversion of erratic boulders from Mont Blanc and southern Valais by the Valais Glacier to the Solothurn lobe during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model, we simulated the ice flow field during the LGM, and analyzed the trajectories taken by erratic boulders from areas with characteristic ...
